We are excited to share with you the changes taking place to indoor sports facilities at Falmer. Changes are being made to our university estate so we can provide the best environments for our students to live, learn and socialise in, and support our net zero carbon ambitions. We will continue to also provide facilities and services to the local community too.
We're refurbishing our newly acquired sports and fitness centre (previous Virgin site). These changes are helping get the campus ready for the arrival of the School of Sport and Health Sciences which will be based on the campus from autumn 2024. The School of Sport and Health Sciences are joining the School of Education and Brighton and Sussex Medical School who are already based at the Falmer Campus.
The exisiting sports hall at Falmer will remain with the rest of the current Falmer Sports Centre being redeveloped to form new academic spaces. This building will become the Meads Building and the current sports hall will be known as the Meads Building Sports Hall.
The new centre will be called the Brighton Sport and Health Complex. The facility will include the following:
Recreational facilities
- Sport Brighton operated gym
- Swimming Pools (main and training pool)
- Dance and Fitness Studio
- Spin Studio
- Two indoor sports courts (e.g Netball)
- Martial art and gymnastics area
Core academic facilities
- Strength and conditioning gym
- Physiotherapy suites with consultation and physio rooms
NHS Services
- Podiatry Clinic
Other facilities
- Seminar Room
- Meeting Room
- Social area

TIMELINES
Sport Brighton facilities for recreational use:
January 2024 - relocation of gym and studios to new Brighton Sport and Health Hub (estimated operational closure of 2 days for move)
Anticipated closure of Falmer Sports Centre for moves: Thursday 18th January (indoor facilities closed /outdoor facilities open) and Friday 19th January 2024 (both indoor and outdoor facilities closed).
Anticipated opening of Brighton Sport and Health Complex: Saturday 20th January 2024.
Early summer 2024 - Two show court hall, gymnastics facility & outdoor tennis courts available
Late summer 2024 - Swimming Pools become available
Additional facilities to be announced. Timelines could be subject to change.
