REVIEW WEDNESDAY 29th MARCH:

Volleyball BY Sandy Chow

Brighton went down at 0-3 to Sussex in both women’s and men’s volleyball matches on Wednesday.

The final match day of Varsity 2023 was kicked off by the women’s volleyball matchup.

Both Brighton and Sussex’s ladies had equal chances at the start of the first set.

A few points were later given away to the Stingrays due to the rotation errors made by the Panthers. This benefited Sussex to build a lead which allowed them to pull off the first set.

The serves and blocks from the Sussex in the second and third sets limited Brighton to turn the game around.

The home team won the game in straight sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-13.

Having had her final appearance at the Varsity, Mimi Bal, the women’s captain of Brighton, was happy with the team’s performance despite being defeated.

“I think we fought really well but there were really unlucky moments that we got down. I am proud of my team for the performance we gave. We couldn’t do it this time but next time I am sure they will be able to do it,” said Bal.

The phenomenal vibes at UoS Sports Centre continued as the men’s volleyball teams put up another thrilling match to the enthusiastic audience.

The Sussex’s men started strong in both the first and second sets. With their powerful spikes, they made it difficult for Brighton to catch up on the scores.

The Panthers were more consolidated in the third set as they were down by only two points at 15-13 halfway.

Their serves, however, costed them a few points which could be crucial for equalizing the game.

Sussex took advantage of Brighton’s mistakes to extend the lead and claimed the victory in the third set.

The final score of the men’s game were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18.

Rugby BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

Sussex won against Brighton in the Varsity Mens Rugby match 31-24. Brighton’s confidence was shaken early into the fixture as Sussex finished with 2 tries and completed both conversions. With the influence of the crowd and atmosphere Sussex was able to take a commanding 19-8 before halftime whilst Brighton showed little sign of getting back into the game.

After a halftime talk, Brighton showed character and was able to mount a tremendous comeback whilst keeping Sussex from scoring for a long stretch of the game.

After 15 into the second half, Brighton took their first lead making the score 20-19, and tried to retain momentum.

“Brighton Head Coach Owen Jones said, “I think the crowd here is always super loud and I think we let some of that get in our heads”.

He would describe the performance as “absolutely class and a real testament to the strength and character of the lads we’ve got”.

Towards the end, costly errors meant Sussex regained the lead and ultimately won the match 31-24 despite Brighton battling hard to make the game competitive.

The Women’s game started off very one-sided with Sussex completing as many as 8 tries and conversions and Brighton unable to respond. An injury was sustained to number 11 T.Edwards just before halftime and Brighton left scoreless. The second half was more of the same as Sussex continued to score.

The final score ended 98-0 on the final day of Varsity.

PREVIEW WEDNESDAY 29th MARCH:

Volleyball BY Sandy Chow

On the third and final match day of Varsity 2023, the overall winner will be decided by the last three fixtures – Rugby, Hockey and Volleyball.

Fans can first enjoy the women’s volleyball matchup at 1.30pm at Hall 1, UoS Sports Centre.

Both teams play in the BUCS Tier 2 League. The Panthers had two wins and eight loses this season, while the Stingrays won nine games with only one lose in the ten league plays.

Mimi Bal, Brighton’s captain, predicted the game will still be competitive.

“It depends on how good of a defense performance we are showing during the game and our energy levels,” said Bal.

“Our Setter Rhia number 6 can be found doing some cool defence as well as faking the opposition with her plays as well,” Bal added.

The captain also plays an important role in defense as she is good at saves and audience can always find her on the ground trying to keep the ball alive.

As for men’s volleyball, both Brighton and Sussex compete in the BUCS Tier 1 League. This season, Sussex won both league encounters and has topped the table while Brighton finished 6th.

Women’s volleyball will kick off at 1.30pm, followed by men’s volleyball at 4pm.

Rugby BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

It is the final day of Varsity on 29 March 2023 as Rugby will take place at the University of Sussex Sports Complex.

The Rugby fixtures will start with the men’s team and then shortly afterward the women’s with both games lasting roughly 80 minutes. With the overall varsity competition going down to the wire the rugby scores will be influential in tipping the scales.

The Panthers men’s team in the South Eastern tier 1 BUCS league played 9 games finishing with 5 wins and 4 losses and ranking 3rd in the table.  The women’s team compete in the second division and finished the season with 2 wins and 8 losses ranking 6th in the table after 10 games. The men’s team competes in the same league as Sussex whereas the women's team does not.

Having lost to Sussex in the regular season with the scores being 21-12, and last year's close match ending 22-18, the men’s team will have extra motivation to change the outcome on the final day of Varsity 2023.

The first match of Rugby will be the men’s team which will kick off at 1.45 pm. The women’s game will be at 4.30 pm at the Falmer, UOS Sports Complex. Tickets are available on the link above

REVIEW SUNDAY 26th MARCH:

American Football BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

The men’s American football found form from the start of kick-off and their preparation going to the fixture paid off. They were able to make several runs into the endzone and advanced the ball far.

Despite many heavy collisions and players requiring some medical attention, Brighton was ahead with 2 touchdowns and extra points with the conversions. By halftime, Brighton was far in the lead finishing 14-0 and Sussex struggling to gain momentum.

Brighton continued their form into the 3rd quarter making more runs into the endzone, however, the quarter ended with Sussex trying to slowly chip away at the lead.

With Sussex playing better they looked dangerous and capable of getting back into the game. Despite their efforts, Brighton was resolute in how they defended and kept Sussex scoreless until full-time.

The game finished with Brighton winning 20-0 on the 3rd day of Varsity.

REVIEW SATURDAY 25th MARCH:

ESports BY Sandy Chow

Brighton lost to Sussex 0-3 in the very first E-sports fixture in Varsity history.

Overwatch 2, Rocket League and Valorant were the three selected games for this year’s Varsity, and the teams together put up three exciting match-ups for the audience.

It was a very intense and balanced match in Overwatch 2. Almost every game was down to the overtime. The better teamwork and execution from Sussex gave them the chance to defeat Brighton for the victory in the first event.

The battle between the two teams in Rocket League was also tough. Brighton displayed some good mechanics which allowed them to have a 3-1 lead over Sussex. The Stingrays came back strong and with the few errors the Panthers made in game 6, our visitors got an opportunity the equalize the match. The unstoppable offense from Sussex guaranteed them the winner in the Rocket League battle and a 2-0 lead in the overall scoresheet.

Both teams have equal chances at the start of Valorant. It was 3-3 on the scoreboard after the first six games. Our visitors had brilliant performance in defense and pulled three games ahead. Sussex battled hard and extended the lead to 11-4. The final score was 13-5.

Connor Lawrence, Brighton’s Esports Captain, appreciated the teams for putting up three exciting and intense games to the audience. “I really thoroughly enjoyed watching Rocket League because the atmosphere was amazing in there. The plays between both of teams were so close in all the matches. It was really hard to tell who was actually going to win even until the end”.

PREVIEW SUNDAY 26th MARCH:

American Football BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

American Football fans will be able to see an exciting matchup on 26 March 2023 at the University of Sussex Sports Complex for the Varsity rivalry.

The match will be held at the Sussex 3g court on the University of Sussex campus and will last roughly 1 hr. The 3rd day of Varsity will feature American Football and Swimming as the main events.

The UK has seen rapid growth in popularity among those seeking and watching American football and the BUCS division has helped push and sustain it. The panthers compete in the Southern Tier 2 league finishing with an impressive 5 wins and 1 loss and ranking 2nd in the table. They finished the season with a convincing win over Solent University, winning 32 to 19.

The Brighton Panther team consists of players from all campuses and have been training regularly in preparation for Varsity to improve their chances.

Last year's varsity match ended with Sussex winning a close match with the scores being 26 to Brighton’s 18. All 11 players will need to play a key role if Brighton wants to change the outcome and put on a good showing.

American Football will begin its warmup at 12 pm and kick-off will begin at 1:30 pm at Sussex 3G.

PREVIEW SATURDAY 25th MARCH:

ESports BY Sandy Chow:

Gamers will be showcasing their talents on 25 March 2023 (Sat) as E-sports make its way to Varsity 2023.

Players from Brighton and Sussex’s E-sports teams will go head-to-head in three chosen games, namely Overwatch, Rocket League, and Valorant.

Overwatch is a team-based 5v5 hero shooter where players select characters for their distinctive abilities to achieve an objective against another team trying to stop them.

Rocket League refers to car football played between two teams of three, which is full of rocket powered cars where both teams try to score against the other.

Valorant is a 5v5 tactical hero shooter in which players attempt to plant a spike (bomb) on one of the bomb sites, while the opposing team tries to stop them using magical abilities and weapons.

Connor Lawrence, captain of our E-sports team, predicts that it will be a very close competition.

“As a society, we have some very strong teams with very good players, especially our Rocket League team I am very confident in. It's very hard to say what the final results will be, but I think we will win 2 games to 1,” says Lawrence.

He also recommends the audience to keep their eyes on Tencalius of the Overwatch team as he is a very talented player with outstanding team play and coordination.

In Rocket League, Nile is someone to watch as he is one of our highest ranked players at Grand Champion 1 (top ranked players in the whole of Rocket League) so his talent will be on full display during the games.

For Valorant, RaBBiTz is a great player and will give a good performance on the playing stage for the audience to see.

E-sports will start at 12pm in the Lecture Theatre, Chichester Building, University of Sussex.Tickets are available on the link above.

Archery BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

Saturday’s fixture of Archery will take place on 25 March 2023, expanding the range of sports that are included in Varsity.

the competition will be a Portsmouth shoot where the competitors have 20 rounds called ends where each person shoots 3 arrows at the target trying to get the highest score.

The Panthers compete in the South East Archery League finishing 15th in the Senior League Table with 11 points and 15th in the Novice League with 12 points. Sussex also competes in the same league finishing above in both tables. Brighton looks to change the outcome in Varsity and has been making strides in their preparation.

The team has been rigorously training on Wednesdays and Sundays, utilizing smaller targets to improve accuracy and aim. The format will be based on Barebow which focuses on the fundamentals where it’s just the archer and their bow, and recurve which permits accessories to aid in aiming or stabilization.

Ones to Watch will be Kennedy Sovine and Hero Mania. Kennedy is an expert archer who competed in America before joining the University of Brighton. Hero has moved up the ranking despite only learning the sport this year and scored highly in all competitions and practices.

Brighton's captain, Alex Fraser, said; “I do not know what the outcome will be, but I do know that the team and I will try our best and that we will have a good time no matter the results”. With Archery being a new inclusion in the Varsity competition, the team will look to make a lasting impression and set a precedent for future events.

The Archery competition will start at 3 pm at Sussex Hall 2, University of Sussex.

Football BY Mohammed Sanni-Oba:

The men's Football match started off very strong with Brighton looking to make a statement and apply pressure continuously. They successfully managed to take an early lead and grew in confidence as the game went on. Close to half time the efforts of the team paid off once again as they managed to make the score 2-0 and left Sussex with no shots on target in the first half.  Sussex found their form and came out fast to make the score 2-1 and pushed for the equalizer. However, Brighton Panthers was able to secure another spectacular goal and maintain the 3-1 lead until full time.

With the success of the women's football team last year winning 3-0, Brighton was unable to repeat the performance. This year Sussex was able to take a 2-0 lead at halftime while looking imposing and dominant. Brighton did manage to secure a goal during the second half but was unable to complete the comeback. Published: Wednesday, 18 January 2023 15:17 Written by Michelle

Thinking about joining the gym? Many struggle to make it stick so here are some tips to make a lifestyle change for good. Less fad, more habit!

  1. Schedule it. We are creatures of habit. Find a time and day when you are free in the week and book yourself in for some you time. Put it in the calendar. Stick to it.
  2. Pace yourself. It's tempting to over do it initially, this might set you up to fail when you can't keep it up. Any change for the better is great. Build on this as your confidence grows.
  3. Find a buddy. There is a lot to be said for keeping yourself accountable through someone else and not wanting to let someone down. Even if you can't workout together why not share your workout data or start a Whats App group to keep you motivated.
  4. Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you are not confident on how to use the gym then ask the staff at the gym, they will happily show you or you can opt for a fitness programme. For a one off payment of £16 you'll get some dedicated time with a professional who will write a plan for you and run through it including how to use any equipment. There are also free tools like the MyWellness App that can demo exercises. If you see a QR code on our kit then scan it to see a video of it's correct use.

So what are you waiting for. Sport Brighton offers gym membership at our three sites:

  • Moulsecoomb Gym & Fitness

  • Eastbourne Sports Centre

You can buy a 24 hour pass (£7.50), take out monthly membership (from £15 per month for students) or buy a years membership (£150 for students). Our full rates for all categories can be found here.
