BUCS Winter Season Round Up

With the Easter break approaching and having completed the final BUCS winter league fixtures here is the round up from this year.

The University of Brighton win rate for the year stands at 45% and the university currently sits 55th in the National BUCS table; that’s 3 places higher than this time last year. Brighton are 14th regionally with some sports we traditionally score well in still to begin. This year 71% of our teams have maintained or improved on their league performance and 59% have done this in the cup.

American Football 1st, Men’s Badminton 1st , Men’s Basketball 1st and Men’s Football 3rd have all successfully consolidated last season’s promotions and have all given themselves a platform to build on next year. Sadly Men’s Lacrosse 1st and Women’s Hockey 3rd couldn’t do the same and have been relegated for next year.

Men’s Football 1st and Men’s Rugby Union 1st gain an incredible 2 promotions in two years. Men’s Football automatically go up while Men’s Rugby head to the Premier League play-offs. Women’s Tennis 1st and Women’s Hockey 1st gain promotions that have been a long-time in the making. Women’s Football 1st bounce straight back from last year’s relegation, winning the Triple Crown of League, Cup and Varsity. When you consider that many of the girls also form part of the Premiership winning Futsal team it is an impressive feat. Netball 4th had a stunning season and were unlucky to not take the league title. Men’s Rugby Union 3rd have been back in a league for the first time in 2 years, a 2nd place is one Brighton will take.

Best win rate this year goes to Men’s Rugby Union 1st, but a special mention has to go to Women’s Tennis 1st…when they start their new league they will do so not having lost a single game of any league match in 18 months – a simply staggering achievement.

All in all we have plenty to celebrate so far that at the Sports Awards.
