Fun In The Sun Success

University of Brighton Staff Enjoy Vice-Chancellor's Sporting Event

Staff members from the University of Brighton were invited to attend an evening of games and activities outside the Falmer Sports Pavilion on Wednesday evening, 19th July. Sport Brighton planned and delivered the event on behalf of Debra Humphris, University of Brighton Vice-Chancellor.

The aptly named event tempted fate and unfortunately the weather was not on our side and resulted in a change of plan from outdoor games, including Stoolball, to various sporting activities and games under the UV light, followed by a taste of Wheelchair Basketball within the dry Falmer Sports Centre.

The free staff event was to include the best kept secret in Sussex, Stoolball. Stoolball is an all-inclusive activity similar to cricket and rounders, that is easy to pick-up. As well as this, there would be some wonderful summer games and activities to try as part of an evening of socialising with work-colleagues, meeting new staff members and enjoying the surrounds of the Falmer Sports Pavilion, under the warm evening glow of the sun.

However, the wet-weather did not dampen spirits and 24 staff members filled the Falmer Sports Centre under the glow of UV lighting to take part in games including UV Dodgeball, UV Badminton and UV Table Tennis. Staff loved the fun of the inclusive activities with the added twist of seeing each other and the equipment glowing in the dark. UV activities have become a regular feature within the Parklife programme engaging a number of students in fun social sporting activity, without the fear of judgement - you may have seen this recently on the news channel.

In addition, staff members gave Wheelchair Basketball a try. This is an exciting, fast-paced, high-scoring game which can include many collisions, (well it is when the trained athletes play it!) VC, Debra Humphris was amazed by the experience "It was great to have a go at Wheelchair Basketball - huge respect to those who play; it is much harder than it looks".

Sport Brighton thank all for coming, regardless of the weather, it was a fantastic evening for all involved.

Watch out for more staff events and the VC Sport Evening next year.
